Week of June 1-5
Rib-it! Rib-it! Ahhh… The sound of frogs in the pond of the one and only… (drumroll please!) Aldo Leopold Nature Center! At this splendid park we explored the pond and observed some awesome animals including frogs (see title), beetles, tadpoles, crayfish and even little fish! We then hiked into the unknown (or on the paths)! During our hikes we watched animals such as birds and turtles through our nifty binoculars.
Now we’ll take a look at what else is happening in the VHE classrooms. Frog hop with us through the fifth grade schedule…
Devil’s Lake: For the end of the year field trip we went to Devil’s Lake for the day! There we went on two different walks, the first was a walk in the woods, and the second one was optional but also very cool. You could see Balanced Rock and other things like the beautiful lake from high up. We had a fun picnic on the grass. Devil’s Lake was awesome!
Writing: This week, writing was fun and relaxed. We creatively designed covers for our Postcards From The Garden booklets! We also edited our poetry books which will be printed very soon. The fifth grade has worked hard on both projects and now they are almost finished. Hooray! Sadly, writing is coming to an end, but we learned a lot while we were at it! Now you can hip hop on, to learn about reading!
Reading: In reading, we have frog hopped into the past of when Earth was created. We read three different Myths, one from the Cherokee Native Americans, one from the Huron Native Americans and the lastly the Hopi Native Americans. All of the myths are very interesting and have different ideas about how our world began. After we finished it was time to write our own creation stories. There was also TFK and Badger Biography groups going on at the same time! Mrs. Mahr has begun to read Boy by Roald Dahl to the Earth group. Wow, reading has really been a splash (it’s frog humor!).
If you are looking for a new and exciting read, you might want to check out The Hidden Ring. Simon and Seegz have been working on that since last summer!!!
Math: In math, we reviewed several things. We reviewed the order of operations, but this time… with exponents! Wooooooo! Exponents! Wooooooo! Anyway, we also reviewed the powers of ten and investigated that with decimals and without decimals. The Innovations group did some serious decimal buisness. They learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. They will have their Section 3 quiz on Monday and Unit Test on Tuesday. As usual, math was a dive into learning.
Social Studies: This Friday is the final chance to be a member of the Nifty Fifty Club. Practice kids (what’s the capital of Wisconsin?).
Physical Education: Hop the bases fast! We have started a new game. In the game you throw three tennis balls (that are numbered one, two and three). When the balls are thrown the people in the outfield try to catch them. If you catch a ball you throw it to the base that matches the number. Physical Education has been hopific (Frog Humor)!
Art: Art, don’t go! This week was our last art or second to last art class in Elementary school! We finished up our beautiful Mexican bark paintings (it isn’t actually bark or paint, but it is still great). Mrs. Cantwell has splendiferous colored pencils that blend well and have a paint-ish look. We also watched Shaun The Sheep, a favorite in the art room. As always, art was hop-iferous.
Music: Graduation is coming up! We will be singing Best Day Of My Life, proudly next week on Thursday. Be sure to be there! Our four soloists are Ben, Nana, Anna, and Saby. The Little Prince is coming to an end. Music was super fun this week!
Flies and Pies: Lunch just got new and improved! No more flies and pies! We’re enjoying the wonders of middle school lunch! How hoptimistic! Check out the new menu and try some scrumptious pizza triangles or taco salad (and much more).
