VHE has given me lots of great memories. I remember my class and I went to Cave Of Mounds when I was in 3rd grade. The cave was big and awesome. At the end of the year we made a book with pictures from that year and questions we had to answer like: what's your favorite subject?
In 4th grade I was in Mr.C's class. My class and I made original raps in groups and put them on our website. We also performed them at The Great Dane. We went to Old World Wisconsin for a field trip. There, my class and I played tug of war with a oxen and we lost. We saw a person make a hook the way the blacksmiths would make it in colonial times and we got to keep the hook.
We found out that the same substitute who had substituted for Mr.C before was substituting for Mr.C again. The substitute teacher would always put (more than needed) tissue boxes out. So, we decided to do a prank on her when she substituted for Mr.C. The prank was to hide all the tissue boxes and each student put a tissue in their pocket at the end all the students wave their tissue at the substitute teacher. But the substitute teacher figured out the we were doing a prank. At the end the when we pulled out the tissue from our pocket the substitute teacher laughed and so did we.
This year in 5th grade, my class participated in Terrace Town. We had a lot of work to do. We also had the Colonial Fair this year, there were only 2 people in my group including Grace P. and me. But still we did a pretty great job in our project on the topic of schooling. While presenting our project to the kids, Grace P. and I got bored and tired doing the presentation again, and again.
Also, some kids in my class had been in a film called Hamlet, and some Hamilton students helped make it happen. Simon was the director, and the one who got the idea started. Simon did a book report on Hamlet, and wrote the Hamlet script in modern English. Some people performed the script for the book report, and the people thought it was amazing, so Mr.C gave Simon an idea to make a film, and Simon said yes.
We also went to the Milwaukee Brewer's game at Miller Park. The bus ride from here to there and back was long. We were going to return when school was over, and our parents were going to pick us up. At the beginning of the game, it was fun, but kids started to get bored as the game went on, like I was. The Brewers lost the game, but it was about time for us to leave anyway.

Sunshine’s memories
My Days Here Were Blue Skies
Kindergarten:
I remember learning new rules mostly because I broke all of them. One of the rules was never go in the woods, because they said, “The Big Bad Wolf lived there.” I also remember my first few years as the VHE Tigers. When we were going to change it I wanting something crazy like the Platypuses. I also remember talking REALLY loud! That got me in trouble a lot. I also remember when Obama was elected, the teachers wanted us to know about politics...so we watched the election on our class’s TV. It was so boring! I didn't even understand what was going on. It was still a cool memory though.
1st Grade:
In first grade I remember writing the most. We all had to write short stories and having to share them with the class. I, of course, didn’t understand what “short” meant so I wrote an entire chapter book. But I also loved school so it was amazing!!!!
2nd Grade:
In second grade I had Mr.C, possibly (obviously) the coolest, amazingest, most awesome teacher in the universe of the best teachers in history. So pretty much he rocked the house (or our class). One of my favorite memories is probably the first day of school when we all wrote are goals for our future… When our class was finished, Mr.C asked us who would like to go first, and I was the only one who raised my hand. Thats how I got my nickname, Sunshine. Another one of my favorite memories was writing my book. I based it on the movie How to Train Your Dragon. My story wasn’t very good, because it was handwritten, it had wrong spelling, and a confusing story plot. It still helped me, and today my handwriting doesn’t look like a bomb went off, or the pencil is a tornado in disguise. (In other words it no longer looks terrible.) I think the reason I liked Mr.C so much was because he had always told us to live to the fullest. Climb the steps to our potential. Unlock our confidence, and not stay in our shell.
3rd Grade:
In third grade Mr.C had moved to 4th-5th grade so I had Mrs.Zucker. I missed Mr.C, but Mrs.Zucker let us play lots of games, which was new. We didn’t have any homework, but a lot of my friends wanted some, so we wrote a report… not for extra credit, but just for fun.
4th Grade:
In 4th grade, I had Mr.C again, and I think that year was one of the best. That year we started Classes On Personal Safety (C.O.P.S.). Our officer, Officer Tom, was the coolest! We threw footballs with drunk goggles (basically bug vision goggles, very blurry), talked about gangs, smoking, drugs, etc. We also got to do some fun stuff like making collages. C.O.P.S was probably the coolest subject ever! Another memory was Old World Wisconsin. We looked at an old school. We learned that students kept warm potatoes in their pockets to keep there hands warm. We saw a blacksmith shop, and got a "wedgie" hook, a wagon maker (the guy had an awesome mustache), a shop with clothes, and Mr.C's favorite… COFFEE! We also saw a house where we saw an old kitchen and a garden with a barn. The best part was we got to play tug of war with oxen! Best field trip EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
5th Grade:
In 5th Grade we started Colonial Fair projects. The subjects were Schooling, Crime and Punishment, Crafts, Architecture, and much more. We also started my second year of Terrace Town. I made a MAGLEV train station with Charlotte, and helped Nisha and Lily make a support system for their high wire. This year, we went to look at the other schools’ Terrace Town projects. We also wrote explanations about what our building, or form of transportation, did. Another one of the coolest field trips was the Brewers trip. Even if they lost, it was fun to interact with one another, race the sausages, and make posters. One Thursday, we went to the Overture Center, and performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. We played songs like Ode to Joy, Oye, New World Symphony, and Simple Gifts. Our music teacher Mrs. Jenks made it all happen. Randy, Mrs. Jenks friend, was the conductor. When I go to middle school I hope I get to do the same things I did here. I will miss VHE but I'm ready for a new adventure... Thanks for being part of my life! Bye VHE, and Bye Mr.C!!!

Kindergarten
In kindergarten, my teacher was Ms. Robbins. On the first day of school I met Giada, who immediately became my best friend. How we started talking was we couldn’t tell if someone was a boy or a girl. Somewhere in the middle of the year I was trying to walk on the bars but… I fell and smashed my face on one of them. My mouth was bleeding a lot, but the thing I was most upset about was that I couldn’t eat my snack. Later in the year I was playing on the bars again with Giada and Ms. Sun. When Ms. Sun was getting on the bars she fell. Her pinky got really messed up and she had to go to the doctor. The next day when she came to school her pinky was crooked.
1st Grade
Mrs. Mahr was my teacher for first grade, and she was awesome. I remember that my reading group teacher was Ms. Maguire, but sadly she left to get her own classroom so we got Ms. Skrade. We did a play on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. I was the narrator and had a bunch of lines, so I was really nervous. But at least I wasn’t as nervous as the kid that peed his pants during the play.
2nd Grade
I was really nervous to be in Mr. C’s class because a lot of people said he was strict, but when I actually was in his class, he was great. The class made a rap called Quest4Confidence and we performed it in front of the whole school. We even made dance moves to go with it. Also, we made a website called Quest4Confidence where it has raps and articles that kids made. At one point in the year my dad came into the classroom. He is a chemist so he brought in liquid nitrogen into the classroom. We dipped flowers in, and then hit them on the floor. It was so cool because they shattered! But it was annoying to clean them up after school.
3rd Grade
I was excited to be in Mr C’s class again but sadly he moved up to teaching 4th and 5th grade so I was in Mrs. Zucker’s class. That year I made new friends, because that was the first year that I wasn’t in the same class as Giada. I became friends with Taylor and Izzi who was new that year. At the end of the year Taylor moved to Sun Prairie.
4th Grade
I was so happy to be in Mr. C’s class again. We made raps again, but this time it was in small groups instead of the whole class. At the end of the year we made rockets out of bottles and tape and stuff. Charlie’s was super cool because he based it off of a real NASA rocket design. When we launched the rockets his went so SO far and when it landed it went straight into the ground!
5th Grade
This year was SUPERULTRAMEGAWESOMAZING! In the winter the class went to Rennebohm Park after school because there was a new ice rink. I didn’t stay for very long because it was freezing, but the second time the class went it was way way warmer. It was so warm that the ice rink melted so instead we had a huge capture the flag snowball fight. Later in the year I submitted a cover for the year book. I only had to wait a week for the result, but it seemed like forever. At the end of the day on a Thursday Mrs. Cantwell went on the speaker and announced that I had won! This year was probably the best out of all six.

I had a lot of fun this year. I remember at the start of the year we went to the Farmers' market. We got tons of food and had a good time. We interviewed the farmers and wrote a report. Later in the year, we went to the Great Dane for a performance. I arrived a bit late, just in time for The Higgs Boson is On. After that, I went to the balcony to discuss world politics with Awonder and Frank. Awonder's birthday party was at Rennebohm park. Awonder and I debated about Putin but I had to leave because of violin lessons. I also had the change of GEMS being in the afternoon. I went to Hamilton everyday to Mr.Nguyen's classroom to take Geometry with a bunch of 8th graders. Simon directed a play, a parody to Shakespeare's play Hamlet. I was King Hamlet in the play. I DIED before the play started! Yeah! I was also Rosencranz, who also DIED. The production was finished after spring break. It was plain awesome.
Last year, we also did a lot of things, including debates. Henry and Ethan organized them. I did a speech on conventional farming. Everything else was pretty much the same as this year. At the end of the year, we launched bottle rockets into air. The kids made them, and they were cool. They launched up into the air and sometimes made crazy landings. Charlie’s was the best. His rocket launched hundreds of feet into the air and it came down and stuck straight into the dirt.
The year before I was in Mrs.Zucker’s class. It was sort of boring without Mr.C. I don’t remember much, but I do remember the time we cleaned up the forest. We found some stuff like a bag of pee, a rat nest, and a bird claw. It was sort of disgusting (bags of pee?, eww).
1st and 2nd grade were kind of blurry. In second, I was in Mr.C’s class and I learned a lot about classroom routines, and math and stuff. In first, I was in Mrs. Mahr’s class and I went for math to Mr.C’s class. It was fun to get with all the third graders and learn.
VHE was a pretty good place, but now I have to move on.

Kindergarten: In kindergarten I had a pretty great time but it was so far back I can’t remember anything more than me and my friends were crazy.
1st grade:
In 1st grade I was an ultra-tiny kid who had a high-pitched voice. I was an adorable guy who was as innocent as a baby elephant. I also think I was the smallest kid in my grade. I remember choosing a cute little stuffed monkey in the Pet Adoption Centre. The Pet Adoption Centre was a "pet rescue" activity to "adopt" a "pet". I don’t know what happened to the monkey, but I know I still have it somewhere over the rainbow.
2nd and 3rd grade:
In second and third grade, I had a hilarious time with Ms. Martin. Close to the end of the year, the class had a prize box that we opened for the last 5-6 Fridays of the school year. Every Friday we’d have a party. If your name was on the board you needed to wait for 5 minutes. If you had checks by your name, each check was another 5 minute wait. The free time lasted from 2:00 to 3:17p.m.
4th grade:
In 4th grade, I had moved from Madison to Mazomanie and back again. When I came back, my class had a pizza party that no one knew about until the day before (Which we haven’t had this year.) This was on the exact day I’d first come back to VHE! Even though I was back with my friends, I knew all along that I had to leave them again. Very soon as a matter of fact. At the end of fourth grade, I wrote and published my second rap song of the year. Earlier in the year my classes had written raps about certain problems that the world had and other topics. My second rap was about showing that people might have conflicted feelings about moving and staying. I performed this rap for our classes at the end of the year. I felt sad that I left my Mazomanie friends and happy to be back with my old friends that I knew well. I had expressed a deeper meaning to what school was about.
This year, A.K.A. 5th grade:
This year I had a lot of fun, especially in my three favorite classes; reading, science, and art. Even though it seems that I’ll only talk about those three, I’m gonna tell you about all of the subjects.
Math: In math Mr.C was being goofy, as usual and I always will remember when he started to say my name in a strange accent that I didn’t even know what country it was from.
Reach: In Reach I finally found out when a bibliography is actually relevant.
Art: In art we’ve been painting, sewing and sculpting and producing a whole lot of crafts, I can’t even name them all!
Phy Ed: We all know that P.E. is about getting outside and having fun, but in my Gym class, I get a lot more stuff done than just that! I built my muscles and stretched my body with yoga poses… I could go on and on, but I won’t.
Literally Literacy (that name was made by me :-) ) : Literacy was very literal. And was sometimes quirky, but it always seemed to turn out to be fun. Even if you accidentally used the stapler on your own thumb.
Writing: This subject is where the rapping all originated. I wrote a THIRD rap. This time, talking about bullying and how it can be stopped.
Science: In this subject of hilariositicity and chaotic learning time we had worked with variables. Also, we talked about how you can lower the amount of variables so the experiment doesn’t get out of hand. This is called a controlled experiment.
Music: Music was a crazy subject where we had a special field trip to go to the Overture Centre (British spelling) as an audience member and a performer. I could explain all day and night about my time at Van Hise, but there just isn’t enough time. So I’m just gonna say, I’ll miss all of you!
Goodbye all my great friends! I’ll be headed to Waunakee for the rest of my school years :,-( ! I hope to visit!

Kindergarten-Teacher: Ms. Robbins (Now Mrs. Robbins-Wright)-Room 100
I remember the first day of school- walking in with my Mom and Dad by my side. I filled with happiness that I was in elementary school. I was the youngest kid in my class at the age of four. I met my first friends in elementary school: Nate and Tommy. Later in the year I met Jameson (Now known as J-Zone).
1st grade-Teacher: Mrs. Powell-Room 105
J-Zone introduced me to Daniel this year and that friendship is still strong today. My mom also brought in a fake brain for parent job thing-a-ma-bob day. Later that year I saw real goat brains (Go zombies!!!)
2nd grade-Teacher: Mr. C-Room 112
MR. C! I entered a class that had the best teacher I will have for my elementary school life. I also met Brennan and we have been great friends ever since. Mr. C and the rest of the class composed the song Quest4Confidence this year. That song is what got Quest4Confidence.weebly.com get its name.
3rd grade-Teacher: Mrs. Powell-Room 126
Really nothing I can recall happened this year. So there was a banana here and a orange here, I walked a lot and... yeah. Boom!!!!!!
4th grade-Teacher: Mr. C-Class 112
I was in Mr. C’s class once again and we wrote a couple of raps, about problems and mishaps. I got a couple of my friends and wrote how smoking has to end! My class and Mrs. Mahr’s class performed our raps at the Great Dane. Oh and I forgot to mention, HG&D started.
5th grade-Teacher: Mr. C-Room 112
My class and Mrs. Mahr’s classes were asked to perform at the Great Dane again. Also this year we wrote some songs and raps, the raps were: Take a Stand, and Chronicles of the Universe. The songs were: Won’t Come Back to Me, Come Back to Me, Sing and Dance with Me, Shine, You’ll be Alright, Done with Fear, and Walking up the Steps. Also on the music topic, MYC was on their annual school tour. I was a part of it and some others from my school were from it too. We performed at four schools with Holst and Purcell. I was in the choir Purcell. We performed at two Verona schools, a Mount Horeb school and then my school, Van Hise. The day after that the whole ⅘ grade went to a Brewers game. Personally I would rather go to a Red Sox game but that would be a two day bus drive. The game was Diamondbacks vs. Brewers. The Brewers lost 3-2. Hamlet was also filmed this year. I played Laertes in the movie/ play you can watch it now at quest4confidence.weebly.com/creativitycorner/minimovies. Also we went to an awesome Carnegie Hall Link-Up program concert. It was at the Overture Center for the arts. There was 1000 4/5 students and the Madison symphony orchestra. Also some more dreaded HG&D. If you want to know what HG&D is then this is all I will tell you because I get ants in my pants whenever I talk about it. It stands for Human Growth And Development. So it is like puberty a little bit of this and little bit of that and yeah.
Goodbye and hope to see you in 6th grade!!!!

I came from Osaka, Japan in May 2012. I spoke no English. One of the first things I remember is that I was scared because I didn't understand what people were saying! My school in Japan was so different from my school in VHE. In Japan we have no computers in the classroom and classes are so much quieter. The playground is much smaller and there is less moving around. I worked in a group with my first friend Jeygu, from Korea.
In 4th and 5th grade I was in Mr.C's class. I had Ms.Betzwiser for ESL and reading. ESL stands for English for Second Language. One day for class I wrote a rap in Japanese. It is about coming here to the United States.
We performed at the Great Dane as a class for our parents and teachers. I sang with Monona,Tamano, and Christina. It was so much fun! My mom and dad came to watch my rap. They were so happy. My favorite field trip was going to the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Game. I liked to watch the batters hit the ball high. All the 4-5 classes went on this trip.
Another great thing I will always remember about school is art class. I like to draw pictures. I also love going to recess. I like to play tag with friends.
I am excited to go to middle school!

3rd Grade
I first came to VHE in 3rd Grade. My teacher was Mrs. Stehle. I was scared to be at a new school, but I was ready.
I liked 3rd Grade. I got to know new people, and I got to know the school. I learned a lot and some of my personality grew. I made a ton of amazing friends. I remember when a hip-hop artist came and taught us songs and dances to them. That was pretty fun. The songs Mrs. Stehle’s class sang were, Tik Tok by Ke$ha and Dance Until The World Ends by Britney Spears. The dances were interesting to learn. That seems to be one of my biggest memories of 3rd Grade.
4th Grade
I was taking a big step from 3rd to 4th Grade. For 4th Grade my teacher was Mrs. Mahr. One of the first things I did in 4th Grade was go to the Farmer’s Market. We interviewed farmers and bought fresh food to eat. When we got back, we ate some of it. The rest of it was made into yummy dishes by parents. Something else fun we did was made up raps. People did raps that they made up about stuff like pollution, the Higgs Boson, moving on, and others (I did one with four friends on bullying). Great Dane Night was where Mr. C and Mrs. Mahr’s classes met up at the Great Dane. I loved Great Dane Night! It was awesome! I did the rap that Youkyoung, Marie-Helene, Amaya, Marcos and I made up, and sang a song that I really liked. A lot of my courage developed that night. Something else I remember was a project in Social Studies. It was called “Discover Wisconsin”. Every person got a place in Wisconsin to learn about and make a fake trip about. Each person/group had $1000 budget. It was pretty fun. The place Lynette (my partner) and I got was Washington Island, Wisconsin. Not many people have heard of it, but it has beaches and nice hotels, and such. We presented to the younger grades, and had a ton of fun. We also went to Old World Wisconsin, in Eagle, Wisconsin. I remember it was a long bus ride. A physical memory is a hook that a roleplay blacksmith (or a real one, he looked like a blacksmith either way) made before our eyes. We explored what everything was like “back then”. Shops, transportation, etc. It was super fun!
5th Grade
In 5th Grade I felt like I was getting a head start I had never had before. I knew people from last year were still going to be in my class and I felt comfortable. Math was easier and so was reading. Some of the highlights of 5th Grade include, well, a lot. One of them is Classes On Personal Safety (C.O.P.S.), where Officer Tom came in and taught us what to do to be safe. That was a fun class. At one point we put on glasses that made our vision all wacky. We tried to catch a football but most of us failed. One time Mr C. and Mrs. Mahr’s classes even got a visit from Phil Hands, who does comic strips for the newspaper! He showed us some of his recent comics. I also enjoyed the Colonial Faire. My subject that I had to study was colonial schooling. We were supposed to have groups of 3 or 4 but I only had one other person in my group, Sunita. We still managed to put on a fair performance. I think it was fun doing the presentation and then realizing that we had taught the people something, especially if they were parents, although it was tiring doing the same performance twenty-six times! The Brewers game was a big thing for me. I had the most fun in my whole year! I liked the Fan Cam best, I think. The Fan Cam is a camera that shows random fans in the audience. We got shown twice!
I had an awesome time at VHE, and will miss it when I go to middle school!

Brennan
Hi, my name is Brennan, and I came to VHE in second grade. Before I came to VHE I never stayed at one school. But now I'm in VHE, and I'm meant to be talking about my memories here, so let’s continue.
Second Grade Teacher : Mr. C
The first day of second grade was the first day of VHE for me. Of course I have been through this experience many times before (as you can see in my intro), but I was still nervous. But not once I got to my classroom; Mr. C is hilarious he can make a joke about anything!!! And in second grade we made raps! The rap was named Quest4Confidence which later on became the name of our class website. The rap was about standing together, friendship, confidence and to stay in action. I loved making the rap because we all worked together making verses and editing or adding on to each others. Also I met my very first friend who stuck with me to fifth grade, (and hopefully longer) IAN!!
Third grade Teacher : Mrs. Powell
I would’ve been in Mr. C's class that year, if it wasn't for the protests. Scott Walker was just voted Governor and he decided he was going to lower the percentage of tax that he gives to teachers, this caused teachers to quit which made Mr. C move to 4th and 5th grade and sadly I'm only in 3rd. But i’m not saying Mrs. Powell is a bad teacher, actually she great! She was so kind and sweet (but could be kind of stern, if you did something wrong).
Fourth Grade Teacher : Mrs. Mahr & Mr. C
Right when I found out that I was in Mrs. Mahr’s class I said “I know her!” I know her because she and Mr. C were great friends! And I found out they switch for math and literacy. They also switch for social studies and science! This was music to my ears! I was gonna be taught by Mr. C. again, and later on I found out the two classes do basically everything together so I basically am in the same class!
Fifth Grade Teacher : Mrs. Mahr & Mr. C
In fifth grade most of the grades went straight grades. That means all grades were separate. But the Fourth and fifth graders are rebels. We were the only grades that were together in one classroom, and thank god we did, because if we didn’t, I wouldn’t have met Kai and Patrick, my two other friends. And in math this year, we had a session that is my favorite math subject… coordinates (this is probably why I love battle ship)! In fifth grade we did Terrace Town. In Terrace Town, Ian and I made Carnegie Steel. We named it after a man who owned a huge steel industry, Andrew Carnegie. The steel factory itself was powered by the heat that it produced. Also in the workers’ break time they relaxed in the rooftop sauna. This made the workers work harder because they're more relaxed.
I had many great memories at VHE...
And I bet Hamilton will add to that collection of memories.

Fluffy Thoughts and Awesome Years
Mrs.Hatmaker, Kindergarten: I only remember one thing from Kindergarten- the night before the first day of school I was chewing bubble gum in my bed. Then I fell asleep. When I woke up the next morning I don’t know how, but gum was all over my hair. My Mom could not get the gum out of my hair, so I went to school with gum all over my hair and people gave me funny looks.
Mrs.Powell, 1st grade: One highlight of first grade is when my class and Mrs.Mahr’s class did a play called the True Story of the Three Little Pigs. I was the wolf, so I was pretty nervous. Someone, I won’t mention his/her name, was so nervous that he/she had an accident in the middle of the play. Another highlight of first grade was the clay stomp. During the clay stomp, each class in the school would go on top of a large amount of clay, then stomp and squish the clay under their feet, then get hosed down. The Clay stomp was a great experience and it was a ton of fun!!
Mrs.Martin, 2nd Grade: In second grade, I don’t remember anything big that happened, but when I was in this class, I remember doing a lot of mad libs.
Mrs.Martin, 3rd grade: At the end of the year a kid named Fabius set up a basketball game, 4th&5th graders vs. teachers. The 4th&5th graders got creamed, but it was still fun to watch.
Mr.C, 4th grade: I have two main highlights for 4th grade. The first highlight was VHE night at the Great Dane. The kids in my class and Mrs. Mahr’s class wrote raps in groups of about 2-7 people. The raps were mostly about ways to make the world a better place. So, after all the raps were finished, the groups performed at the Great Dane and some kids performed some of their talents. The second highlight was The Debates. Two kids in are class (Ethan and Henry) watched the presidential debates and thought it was interesting, so they thought our class should do the same thing. So, the entire class thought about topics that could be debated about. Then two people would choose a pro or con for each subject, or two people would make a presentation about a topic. The president of the school board even came to watch and said it was one of the best examples of learning he had ever seen.
Mr.C, 5th grade: Near the middle of the year, my class and Mrs.Mahr’s class went to Rennebohm Park after school - twice. The first time we played hockey, and the second time we played snowball capture the flag. The activities brought good bonding time out of the classroom. We also did Terrace Town. It was my first time doing Terrace town. It was fun to learn about ways to keep the earth green and save energy, and to create an entire town. I’ve had good memories at Van Hise and I will never forget them.

I have been an altruistic, inquisitive, erudite student who acts with decorum here at Van Hise from 2nd through 5th grade. I will have to abridge my memories in order to fit the enormous amounts of productive events that have happened in my career at Van Hise. Being in Van Hise, I had several teachers, Mr. C, Mrs. Mahr and Mrs. Zucker, and the other teachers that educated us in music, gym, library and art that helped make me a precocious student.
My school year here at Van Hise consists of 4 school years starting at 2nd grade while many others have been here for 6 years. When I was first introduced to the school, I thought that it was enormous. Being in it for the first time was a bit like going into the Labyrinth. It didn't resemble the color or shape of Shorewood Hills School, my former school.
Before school started, I prophesied that it would be quite frightening in the beginning. The school playground was crowded like the kids were ants in an ant hill, and I was lost . Luckily, I was guided to the right teacher before the bell rang and that was one of the abiding memories of 2nd grade. Even though the first day of 2nd grade might not be an anecdote for many people, today was actually my first day at Van Hise. I was frightened but was alleviated by the friendly and calm environment. I still would like it if the day was to already have ended. I read some chapter books at the time and already had almost finished the Magic Tree House series. I liked the focus practice we did and the read aloud since Mr. C read in an ever so “expressive” voice and mood. I increased knowledge in every aspect including confidence. Mr. C was a benevolent teacher. Sometimes, he is a bit austere, but other times, he is inspiring and hilarious. He cajoled a lot of students including me too take a stand. I made a educational math video about the volume of a prism with the base as hexagon. We also made a rap and we created a website, quest4confidence. We wrote reports for the website and I wrote a report about the politics in our local neighborhood and WI. I extol Mr. C`s exemplary behavior.
3rd grade, I had the most self-esteem. Boosted from last year’s confidence, I was verbose and advocated a lot of deep conversations with eclectic opinions in which a lot of kids in our class were participating in. I like how people shared their opinions with others throughout the class because it was interesting to hear different point of views. This year, I started my TAG advanced math class. We also made a book with every person’s persuasive writing about cursive. We either wanted to advocate for cursive to continue or to stop the tradition. I didn’t like cursive so I wrote against it. On the 100th day of school, we had to bring 100 things and I brought a list of a hundred words. I improved in math and learn more concepts. For Terrace Town, I made a weird structure that wasn't really that eco-friendly.
For 4th grade, we made more raps, and I, with Joseph and Charlie, made a rap about a recent discovery, the Higgs Boson. We presented them at the Great Dane. It was spectacular! At the medieval fair, I saw some astonishing medieval castles. We went to Old World Wisconsin and we got to see blacksmiths, colonial farming and shop management and other colonial occupation. I made a Discover Wisconsin presentation and my location was Superior, WI. I’m pretty sure I did do superior at the presentation!
For 5th grade, I had a fantabulous year. We started the year with a peer interview and a farmers’ market report. I had an explicit interview. A cartoonist came to show us some of his political cartoons. Phil Hands also taught us how to draw caricatures. We had Terrace Town and this year, I did better academically. I made several eco-friendly buildings and wrote a thorough description. I liked science for all of the school year. We had a lot of cool and exhilarating science experiments such as one with a water wheel. Water spewed all over my body and face and I got a little shower! I also liked the Colonial Faire in which we studied and made reports about different topics in Colonial times. I was a judge in the Salem Witch Trials group. I went to the Milwaukee Brewer’s Game! It was so exhilarating and Miller Park was enormous! I also got to write the blog for our website and I really liked to have the responsibility of writing the news for room 110 and 112. The trip to the Overture Centre to see the Madison Orchestra ( it was a program called the Orchestra Sings) was awesome! I liked the finale of the Firebird the best. We went on a lot of field trips this year, including two trips to the school forest. I liked describing the tranquil and natural environment at the school forest in a descriptive journal entry. We also had a field trip to the planetarium at Memorial High School. It was fascinating to see the sky using advanced technology. For 4th and 5th grade, my teacher was the humorous, prestigious Mrs. Mahr (with a bit of Mr.C).
I had a wonderful school year at Van Hise with not one day where I had a diminution of mirthfulness!

Angel
I only spent the second semester of my fifth grade year at Van Hise. Before that, I spent most of my time in Beijing. My mom is a visiting scholar, so she took me to the United States with her.
When I had my first glimpse of Van Hise on Google Earth, I thought it didn’t look like a school because it is not a tall building. But when I come to Van Hise, I think it is so cool. There are swings and slides! Also there is a big playground with grass.
When I became a student of Van Hise, I realized that there are only 24 students in my class! I also knew that students were working on Terrace Town. We used boxes and color papers to make buildings and other things that we could see in a city. After few weeks, we went to Monona Terrace to see Terrace Town that our school did and other schools did, too.
Later, I came to the VHE Carnival. I was very happy on that night because I got some pencils and an English book.
One morning, Ms. Chia-Wen told me a boy from Beijing would come to study in Van Hise. His name is Leo. Soon my mom and Leo’s mom became friends. When my mom had a meeting, Leo’s mom would pick me up.
During Spring Break, I went to Washington D.C. and New York, and I visited some museums there. After Spring Break, I went to an Art and Craft Fair. I saw a lot of interesting things and I bought a cute wallet.
I also remember we went to School Forest. We walked in the woods with a tour guide and we also saw some interesting plants and seeds. Recently, we went to Miller Park to watch Brewer’s game. I have never gone to a baseball game so I had no clue when they started to play! After a while, I finally understood the baseball rules but I still didn’t know which team won. I also ate something that I had never had before.
My classroom teacher Mrs. Mahr encourages me a lot. She is a strong woman. Ms. Koval makes me love sports. All teachers make me love Van Hise.

Fantabulous Memories
During my 2 years of attending Van Hise, I had lots of hilarious, spectacular teachers, lots of friends, and most importantly lots of memories.
Year 1: 4th grade
In 4th grade I was a very shy kid when I first came here, then I noticed a sign on that door: Through this door walk the GREATEST kids. From that moment on I did my very best. I then made friends with a spectacular person named James. He was my best friend until he left at the end of 4th grade. One of my favorite memories is the time we went to Old World Wisconsin. One of the only parts I remember is when some people in our class had to pick up oxen droppings. Then we all played tug-of-war with two oxen. Guess who won? We totally lost, because the oxen were just too strong and were just walking away as if all of us (Mrs. Mahr’s class) were just a bug to them. But, it was a really stupendous time.
Year 2: 5th grade
This year was probably the best. For one, I am a 5th grader. Secondly, I get to do strings. Third, well you get the point. My life as a 5th grader was awesome because of strings. It was my favorite period; every day I look forward to strings (I play the violin). One more fantabulous memory was the trip to the BREWER’S GAME!!!! I absolutely loved it. It was my first time! But sadly we lost (2-1 diamondbacks).
But I still had fun! I was in a group with Mrs. Mahr and J-zone (A.K.A Jameson.)
Another fun memory I had was M.S.O. (Madison Symphony Orchestra) we practiced then we performed in the CAPITOL THEATER!! For our finale, we sang Oye. It was a fantabulous experience where the whole thing was magnifico!
All in all my years in Van Hise Elementary was a stupendous, superb and exhilarating time.

Awonder
I’ve been attending Van Hise elementary for my whole elementary career, and even visited some years before kindergarten :).
I still remember when I was in preschool, and after nearly every day, I would come to Ms.Mahr’s room, where my older brother was attending 1st grade. To me, they seemed like giants, so it was fun to stay and hang out with them.
I don’t remember many memories of kindergarten, but I do remember learning what a hypothesis was, and what the word “observation” meant. I also found out that I could read with average proficiency, although I hadn’t read any chapter books at that point.
During 1st grade, I remember doing math with Mr.C, and being able to solve multiplication problems with a decent speed. I also remember meeting Joseph for the first time, after casually asking him what the answer to the math problem”9x9” was on the rug. After that, we were friends ever since (Don’t ask me why, I know it’s a strange way to start a friendship). In addition, I finally won the Nationals (K-1 chess championship) for the first time. It was nice because I had been so close twice! The trophy was taller than me at the time, but soon, I became taller than the trophy!
Later, in the more advanced 2nd grade, I remember reading chapter books for the first time. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was one of the most interesting books I had ever read. Then, I really got into reading, and started to read more chapter books, such as the Boxcar Children series, as well as pretty much finishing the Magic Tree House series. In addition, I was able to solve math with greater speed, and accuracy. On the chess related side, I participated in the world youth chess championships (WYCC) for the first time, and for the first time, I also rode a plane. I remember a kid (he who shall not be named) asking my little brother whether he was Awonder and congratulating him. My brother said that he explained to the kid that he was in fact not me, but the kid didn’t care anyway.
The next year, in third grade, I refined my facility with the standard algorithm and then got introduced to graphs, and linear equations. I also passed the GEMS test, which was one of my most important experiences, as well with being introduced to MAPs tests. I felt that during third grade my chess rose immensely, and during that same year, I won the WYCC U-8, which I think was my first step into starting to play chess well.
During 4th grade, I was introduced to projects, where I had to create book reports, and do the Wisconsin expo. I thought that the research was fun, and in general I got lots of experience with research projects, computers, and technological devices. One important thing I had to deal with was GEMS homework, which turned out to cause immense strains on my left hand after drawing out tons of graphs and writing out answers. As a result, due to a poor performance at the 2012 WYCC, I decided to quit GEMS (not because of my left hand not feeling its best) because of the fact that too much gems homework caused me to lose time off my chess training.
In 5th grade, I really felt that I had improved my writing and I started to read a lot of different books and series. An important feature for me this year was that I was allowed to take an online course for my math, instead of doing the common curriculum. This fits my traveling lifestyle. In addition, I won the 2013 WYCC and got my picture on the cover of Chess Life magazine. For me, another highlight of this year was the Colonial Faire, where I had to do the subject of games.
My entire elementary career was very exciting and I loved my 6 years of elementary school at Van Hise!

These are all the things I enjoyed about this school. But this is it, ok?
I came to this school in 3rd grade, so I’ll start from there.
3rd: Mrs. Zucker
I can’t remember much from 3rd grade. What I do remember though, is Terrace Town (My dad calls it Lazy Town). I wasn’t very inspirational, and all I came up with was a craft stick hot-glued to a container lid. But it broke on the bus. Boo-hoo.
4th: Mr C.
Not the brightest year, but not a really bad one. A BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG highlight though was Phil Hands, political cartoonist visiting our classroom! He showed some of his work, and taught us how to draw teddy bears, frankensteins, and Barack Obama. Oh yeah! I published the first 2 William, a Normal Kid Without Normal Adventures. And I wrote a song.
5th: Mr C.
This year was really fun. Probably because it was the year that I remember the most from. Getting back to this class allowed me to realize my full potential, set a high standard for myself, publish more books, got another visit from Phil Hands, some fun train whistle recorders (they even LOOK like train whistles) tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeting high D’s, not one, but 2 visits to the school forest, Miller Park, going back to the Great Dane for a second song performance, a really bad winter, and, looking forward to graduation!
So, I hope everybody’s year ends with a SMILE!

This is my first year at VHE. I spent last year being homeschooled. Public schools were new to me. I was excited and scared on the first day of school. I saw a huge group of kids gathered on the playground. I didn’t know who my teacher was, but it didn’t take long to find out. Her name was Mrs. Mahr. She was a very confident and kind teacher. (She is one of the best teachers I have ever had).
The kids at VHE were nice too. On the first day of school during recess I got my first bee sting. I have heard many stories about bee stings and how much they hurt , but mine did not hurt. It just felt like a poke. I went to the nurse’s office and got ice. Soon it did not even feel like a poke. Charlotte was there with me the whole time even though it took the rest of the recess (thanks, Charlotte!). Then we came back to the classroom. I had a good rest of my day!
Later, I met Mr. C. He was a nice teacher too. Mr. C was my math and science teacher. Then, I met Ms. Kurka, Ms. Jenks and Ms. Cantwell. Then there was Ms. Betzwieser, Ms. Pucci, and two Ms. Martins. Ms.Koval is the PE teacher. Now the new assistant gym teacher is Ms. Love. Ms. Kurka is the L.M.C teacher. The music teacher is Ms. Jenks, and the art teacher is Ms. Cantwell. Ms. Betzwieser, Ms. Pucci, and 1 of the Ms. Martins are reading teachers. The other Ms. Martin, is a Second Grade teacher.
I eventually got used to the V.H.E ways. I also made friends. We had lots of field trips to the farmer’s market, school forest (twice!), the Overture Center and many others. They were all fun.
Currently, I am learning and liking my new school!

The year I came to Van Hise, we voted on what our school mascot should be. There were four choices. The choices were a hedgehog, a shark and the other two I forgot (hey!! it was four or five years ago!!!). I voted for the hedgehog, and the hedgehog had the most votes, so, it became the new mascot. I thought that it became the hedgehog because I voted for it. Also, I thought I was the only one who voted in the school. One of my favorite things in kindergarten was nap time. We were also allowed to read books. I didn't really know why there even was a nap time, but I liked it anyway.
First Grade
Teacher: Mrs.Powell
That year, I really liked to write small stories, which were only about 3 to 4 pages long. Now when I look back at the stories, they make me laugh. I also liked the days we did crafts with our buddies. Sometimes we would color, sometimes we would paint. Even now I like doing crafts.
Second Grade
Teacher: Mrs.Powell
In second grade I participated in Terrace Town. The scale is one inch is 8 ft in Terrace Town. Also there is a rule that we should make the buildings out of recyclable material. For instance we used milk cartons for two story houses and some random boxes for shops and other buildings (like apartments, restaurants, business, etc). We wrapped the boxes in paper to make them look not as sloppy or messy.
I thought this was a very nice experience! I had hoped I could do that again soon.
Third Grade
Teacher: Mrs.Powell
This year I enjoyed recess. At recess I would play cherry bomb, with a few friends in my class. My friends and I had this club called the bar club. In this club, we did uninvented (at least we thought that it wasn't invented) somersaults at a bar. A thing that I liked about the club was that anyone could join!
This year I went on a field trip to the Capitol. we got to go to this room where the governors made laws. We had to stay very quiet. (We got scolded by one of the guards - I think they're guards.) I enjoyed eating lunch outside with my friends. I think it was a nice trip but, I didn't like the humidity in the air...
Fourth Grade
Teacher: Mr.C (Christopherson)
In fourth grade, one of my main highlights are the production of "Hamlet". This play was adapted by Simon (director) for a book report. I played the part Ophelia. I enjoyed acting. I thought it was cool that Simon adopted such a complicated play, and even put some humor to the script.
This year for a field trip we went to Miller Park (Milwaukee) to watch baseball. I thought it was interesting because I have never been to Miller Park. I also didn't know the rules/concept of baseball (which I now know thanks to Mr.C). One thing I thought was boring was the bus ride, which was a hour and thirty minutes long. I thought this was a best field trip so far, except the bus ride.
I am very excited for next year!!!! ( Fifth Grade )

A Stash of Memories
Kindergarten: Mrs.Delgado
My memories of kindergarten are quite vague, but I do remember being both nervous and excited at once, for I was not sure about school. Soon enough, I met Cady (in the girls bathroom) and we became friends. A fun memory of mine from kindergarten is the clay-stomp, but the only thing I truly remember is squelching around in the clay.
First grade: Mrs. Mahr
In first grade, I was introduced to a friend that I still have now. Grace loves to laugh, that`s for sure (as indicated by her last name). She also knocked out one of my two front teeth before a field trip. She was so excited that she was jumping up and down, and conked her head in to my mouth. The other tooth was loosened by the impact, so the dentist had to pull it out. Mrs. Mahr, my teacher in first grade, is now the teacher of my partnering class.
Second grade: Ms. Ostertag
In second grade, a new girl came to our class. Her name is Maddie aka Madison, now living in Madison, and we became friends quickly. I also got to participate in Terrace Town, a fun constructing project. My parents had a sabbatical (a long break from work, and in their case, after seven years of working) later that year, and during those four months, we went on a cruise ship (courtesy of my grandfather) and I got a stomach bug from a little girl who was on the ship with us. I also spent about three months in England, doing a house swap with the Snooks, a British couple. I went to Saint Mary`s Catholic School in Year Three (their school years are one year ahead of ours) and made plenty of friends. One of them was named Lola, who showed me around on my first day of school. It was hard to leave, but I have memories of my friends in England.
Third grade: Ms. Ostertag
In third grade, a friendly intruder arrived. Anna was very kind, and we started to spend time together. I also had the pleasure of getting a new pet! She`s a cockatiel (a type of bird) named Merida. The reason we got her is sort of funny. It went sort of like this: I wanted: a fish→ a mouse→ a parakeet→ a cat→ a rat or cockatiel (My class in third grade had a vote and cockatiel won) → a cockatiel. We went to Pet Supermarket and they happened to have cockatiels coming to the store soon. We got Merida on the day she arrived at the pet shop. The reason for her name? She was the bravest cockatiel at the store. When we were trying to name her, I suggested Brave, but then reconsidered. You know the Disney movie “Brave”? The main character`s name is Merida, so you can guess how I came up with the name! Merida is also super affectionate. She loves to be pet on her miniscule ears, but will bite if she is pet the wrong way. Cockatiels are not known for their talking, but Merida loves to mimic our sounds (things like drinking, trilling, my mom coughing when she's brushing her teeth, etc.), and is capable of saying “Step up!”, “I`m a pretty bird”, and “Hello”. She is close to saying “I love you”, but she has an extra few syllables. Sometimes she'll mix phrases to things like “Hello pretty bird”. Merida is an adorable bird with a wonderful personality, and I am glad to have her in my family.
Fourth grade: Mr.C (The best teacher ever)
This was probably the best year for me at VHE. I met many awesome people, one of them named Sophie. I soon discovered a hidden talent: writing songs. I have always loved to sing and write poems, so this was a fun experience for me. My song is called “Shine”, and many other classmates also wrote songs along with me. My dad accompanies me on the guitar when I sing it. This helped me to find confidence. When I performed it at the Great Dane Night, I felt lots of courage. Mr.C talked me into doing the talent show this year, so I sang my song there as well. I also got to participate in another musical program. The Orchestra Sings, Carnegie Hall Link Up program, included us playing the recorder, singing and dancing. My top two favorite songs in the program were “Oye” and “The Firebird Suite”. I also edited “A Dash of Creativity”, a collection of classroom poems. My book “The Cursed Box” is in progress, and I hope to finish it over the summer. I found that my favorite subject this year is math, and I got a chance to represent Van Hise in the MathFest this year. The chocolate chip cookies there sure were good with milk! This year we went to Milwaukee for the Brewers game. I had a blast, but it wasn't the actual game that was the best; it was the quality time I got to spend with my friends. I also had some fun experiences with my own athletics this year. The Triathlon and the Mud Run (both through Tri4Schools), were very fun. In the Triathlon, I did the long distance - 100 yard swim (4 laps in the indoor pool), 4 mile bike, and 1 mile run. It was really tiring, but I finished first in my division! As for the Mud Run, I got super muddy. I did the 1½ mile run, complete with an ice cold stream, chaotic bouncy house, another tub of ice cold water (brrrrr!), and the Mud Pit. After I lost my shoe in the Mud Pit, my fellow and former classmates, Brennan and Vaughn, helped pull me out. I was freezing cold afterwards, but had a fun time! I got to participate in Terrace Town for the second time in my years at Van Hise. Beforehand, we read an article in the Newspaper about an urban agricultural group called “HomeGR/Own”. Grace and I decided to do further research on this program, and it soon formed into a report. Soon enough, everyone was doing reports in groups, following our footsteps. The reports were done on various things, but most of these ideas ended up in our town! Find the report that Grace and I did Here, plus a bunch of other reports that our classmates did.
I hope to have Mr.C again for another amazing year at Van Hise!
I have only been here for 2 years. I moved here from Milwaukee. In third grade,I had Ms.Cahill. She was a good teacher. She was really nice, A memory I had was that we had a day that we read for a whole day. Some kids did MadLlibs. I just read a book.
In fourth grade I had Mr.C. A memory is we went to Rennebohm park and played hockey. Thank you, Mr.C, and my dad, for making it happen. I had an awesome book report. The book was about was about pitching. During the book report, something funny happened. Pitching is not all about using your arm, you use your whole body. I was going to say “lead with your hips” but instead I said, “don't forget to fart on the batter.” Everyone laughed.

Kindergarten
My first year in Van Hise was awesome. Mrs. Hatmaker was my teacher. You know how kindergarteners cannot go down the hill. One time me and my friends tried to be like 2nd graders and go down the hill, but it turned that 2nd graders could not go down the hill either. We got in big trouble. Mrs.Keeler caught us.
1st grade
This is one OF MY FAVORITE YEARS! Mrs. Mahr was my teacher. My favorite part of 1st grade was throwing a snowball at Torii at recess. Luckily I did not get caught, but Torii sprinted after me.
2nd grade
This year was so fun! Mrs. Stehle was my teacher. My favorite part of second grade was playing truth or dare with my friends. Jacob dared me to jump off the rocky thing on the playground. But I could not do it 'til third grade.
3rd grade
My favorite year, so far! Mrs. Nelson was my teacher. My favorite part of 3rd grade was playing a big game of basketball. Fabius was on my team along with Tsultrim, and Vieri. The other team had Sudashan, Dhani, and Capone. Our team won cause of Fabius. 3rd grade was awesome!
4th grade
Mrs. Mahr was my teacher, again. This year was cool, because I made a lot of new friends. My favorite part of 4th grade was playing another basketball game. It was Awonder's birthday party at Rennebohm park. Me, Dervon, Mr.C, and Dhani were on a team. The other team was Fabius, Jeremiah, Yosef, and Sophie S. Dhani was amazing at stealing, and I think he is the reason we won 40 to 2.

Kindergarten
Ms.Robbin’s class
Kindergarten was a blur. It’s been like, 4, 5 years? Yeah. All I remember is that I missed the first day of school because I was in Korea at that time. When I came to school, I befriended a girl named Sarah, who wore the same glasses as me. We became instant friends, and some people thought that we were sisters, since we were inseparable. And, this year was when we had the Clay Stomp! It was where we did many things with clay, like carving out drawings in a giant rectangular piece of clay. I can’t remember what I drew, but I think I drew ice cream.
Also, we voted for the new mascots, and ended up with the hedgehogs. The mascot colors were turquoise and lime green. I was happy because I voted for the hedgehogs, and so I thought we got the hedgehogs because of me.
First grade
Mrs. Mahr’s class
Being a part of Mrs. Mahr’s class was FUN! We had an event called “Poetry Pazzaz”. It was where we walked all the way to Sequoya Library, and read the poems we wrote in front of our parents. I wore small shoes, and it gave me blisters, which REALLY hurt.
Also, once, Kyra and I were dragging the lunch basket on the floor, but Mr.C stopped us. I don’t remember what he said, but I was crying. Now I think I know why he stopped us, probably because it was disturbing the other classes.
Second grade
Ms. Cahill’s class
In second grade, we had some “girl problems”. Sophie P. and I had become arch-enemies because we were fighting over who was who’s friend. All of the girls in my class were talking about each other behind each others’ back. It was a horrible experience.
But then, Ms.Cahill called all the girls for a “girl talk” during writing time, leaving the boys wondering what in the world was going on. I remember a few girls, (including me) crying at that time. Happy memories, happy memories.
Also, we had my first ever Terrace Town. It was very fun constructing things. Sophie and a few others were in my group making a treehouse, and it was hard. The project almost took the whole constructing time to build.
Third grade
Ms. Cahill’s class
This year, we went on a field trip to the Capitol. At the end of the year, we bid our goodbyes to Ms.Cahill, because she was moving to Minnesota. MINNESOTA!!! SOOOOOOOO far away (not really, but whatever)! It was like she was saying “Adios amigos!”. But, I knew I couldn’t convince her to stay, so instead I hugged her tightly and said goodbye.
Fourth grade
Mr.C’s class (FINALLY! It took a long time for you to reach the present!)
The second I stepped in room 112, I knew something was crazy about this place. I found out something interesting - Sophie P. has been with me for every year since kindergarten. After 2nd grade, we had become great friends, since we had no choice but to talk to each other. We had found out that we both liked to draw, and liked many of the same things. Then, we decided to hang out, and then we had become close friends. Many things happened over the year. The first one was that I published my first book, “The Flying Horse With A Mustache”. Second, Simon directed a play originally written by Shakespeare, called “Hamlet”. Simon had rewritten it to make it more modern, and a bit funnier. Then, one of Mr.C’s friends came to our classroom, and gave advice for the play. I was part of the cast, and the short film was hilarious. Third, classes 112, and 110 performed at The Great Dane. I sang “Counting Stars”, and “Let Her Go”. It was AWESOME! Fourth, there were original songs composed by Emma, Sophie P., Sophie S., Charlotte, and Raia.
The last is that I will be leaving, and going to South Korea to live there. I am really sad, and also excited at the same time. I surely will miss this great school!

The first day I came to Van Hise, I was nervous and didn't have that many friends. I only knew one kid, and his name was Aiden.
A year and a couple of months later, my friend Simon did a book report on Hamlet and turned it into a play. I played Player 2, and Francisco, I had a good time doing this play.
While we were doing Hamlet, we were also practicing for the Colonial Fair. I was in the food group, and played the kid for the skit we performed. The fun thing about it was that we were able to eat food, like bread.
Here is my favorite field trip - the Brewers game. Everybody got to bring their electronics and other fun stuff.
I had a fun time this year and hope to be in Mr. C's room next year!

Do you remember your first day of school? I certainly do. I was so excited and happy to start school!!!! Until, that is, I actually got there. I was in Ms. Robbin’s class. The first thing I thought was “Wow.” It was like a zoo! All the sudden I was not so excited. Although, I do have quite a few fond memories from my experience at Van Hise. Such as when Skylar and I became best friends in kindergarten. Or the super-exciting clay stomp. I remember when it was playtime Skylar and I would always play with the animals, and by the time we were done setting it up, it was time to put them away.
In 1st grade one of my big memories is the ice cream social. I remember I piled everything I could see on it and in the end my sundae was piled way over the top of the bowl. This was also the year when Ms. Mcguire became a full teacher. I was in her class and I felt very dominant being the older one in the class after always being the youngest in my family. I loved being in Ms. Mcguire’s class because she was always so nice. This was also the year Eja and I became friends. The last memory I have from first grade is the octopus project. This was a project where we painted paper plates and paper towels and glued them together. The paper towels were the tentacles and the plate was the body. They were pretty cute but by the end we were all messy.
In second grade, I honestly don’t remember much. What I do remember is having Ms. Zucker as my teacher. It was her first year at Van Hise. Another thing I remember about second grade is crayfish. We were studying biology. One time Ms. Martin left for a minute and someone tipped over the bowl with the crayfish and water in it. It made a huge mess! We all had to sop up all the water. That’s about the extent of my memories from second grade.
In third grade it was the first time I had a loop in classes. That means I was the same teacher for two years. Other than that, I think the only other memory I have is being one of the older students in the class. I really liked being the older one. That’s most of what I remember from third grade.
Now comes fourth grade. I’m in fourth grade now. There are many things I could tell you about fourth grade, but I’ll pick my top five. At the beginning of the year we did peer interviews. We got assigned partners and we had to find as much information as we could about them. My next is C.O.P.S. That stands for Classes on Personal Safety. We learned everything from acting safe to shaking hands for a job interview. My next memory is the multi-cultural feast. Everybody brought in a dish to represent where they were from. It was so delicious! We all had a lot of fun planning and eating the feast. My last memory is Terrace Town. This was where we made a mini city out of recycled materials and set it up at Monona Terrace. This was also so much fun!
I have so many fond memories of Van Hise and I wish I could share them all but I don’t have enough room. I hope you enjoyed reading this piece!

Kindergarten - Ms.Robbins
In kindergarten I remember LOVING the end-of-the-day playtime. I would sit on the rug with my friend Ingrid and we would pull out the action figure bin. I would dig through it to find the little gypsy girl that I think was from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That is all I remember, besides someone throwing scissors:). Also, the clay stomp was pretty fun. I remember that I kept my snack, a popsicle, even though Ms. Robbins wanted us to throw it out if we weren’t done. I kept it because I wanted to wait until I cleaned off to finish eating it, but I wanted to show my mom how messy I was, so I waited. I loved all the activities we did.
I made a new friend, Grace, and I was yet to learn that we would be together from kindergarten up to 4th grade. . .
First Grade - Mrs.Mahr
In first grade we had something called Poetry Pizzaz. I read my poems in front of lots of people in the Sequoya Library. Mrs. Mahr put me first in line!
Mrs. Mahr had auctions of her kid stuff, so I got 3 movies and a drawing pad.
Second Grade - Ms.Cahill
In second grade Grace and I were arch-enemies. We also had class "girl problems". We had to have a class "girl talk" with Ms.Cahill, during writing. Some people denied having anything to do with it, but all the girls were there. We apologized for doing, um, certain things. Grace and I were fighting over who was who's friend and who got to be with who. Stuff like that. So happy! Some of us cried (we were second graders, what do you expect?). Anyways, second grade was kind of a bust. Lots of fights and some tears. Sorry if you are reading this. :(
Third Grade - Ms.Cahill
In third grade I was assigned the peer mentie of Yosef, but we didn't really get along well. He didn't want my help but my job was to help him because it was his first year in Van Hise. We made an iMovie trailer about our not getting along. That helped the matter a bit. It was fun. Also, Ms.Cahill was moving to Minnesota! It was so sad! When she told us she said, "I should probably tell you before the end of the year, I'm going to be moving to Minnesota." It was heartbreaking! But there is more happiness in the next paragraph!
Fourth Grade - Mr.C
There is so much to tell here! One of my short but favorite memories is hearing that Ms. Cahill had come for a visit! Grace and I had raced down the hall, cough cough...kind of...cough cough...PUSHING...people out of the way, but not really. We were saying, “Excuse me! Sorry! Gotta get through!”
When we saw her we really bolted. We hugged her and she said she didn’t recognize us because we were so tall!:) It felt awesome to see her again!
I also met the girl who is now my best friend, Emma, this year. We have so much in common. I also met my friend Nana this year along with Kyra and lots of other friends!
Another highlight is my birthday, which was also Great Dane Night! I sang “Let it Go” with Kyra and Emma and my original piece “You’ll Be Alright”. Then, as a surprise, my brother sang “Happy Birthday” for me! Everyone joined in, and it was very touching. I had some awesome food to add to the enjoyment of the night.
I finally published the book I had been writing for two years, called The Best Friends Club! I was so excited about it! Now I am working on another cool book. Another thing I published this year is my song, “You’ll Be Alright” like I mentioned earlier.
This year Simon adapted Hamlet, a three hour play, into a ten minute modernated movie for kids, for his a book report. WOW. We performed it and the Hamilton film crew filmed it for us. It was a mini movie! I got to be a player and a soldier. It was awesomely awesome!
On May 7th we went to Miller Park in Milwaukee. It was a long and tiring bus ride, but it all made up in the end. It was really fun! I raced the sausages, watched the sausages race, and made a poster:) It was especially fun because my dad was chaperoning. My group was Emma, Grace, and I.
On May 15th we went to the Overture Center to play recorders and sing with the orchestra. My favorite song was Oye. I liked to sing at the top of my lungs and as loud as I can! Grace and Emma said they both heard my voice individually during the practice!
Fourth grade art has been a little more interesting, too. I’ve always wanted to do perspective drawings, which we got to do this year.
During the Colonial Fair I played a girl and a boy in my skit about schooling. It was kind of hard to find costumes, but otherwise it was awesome!
My VHE memories are very good (mostly), and I can’t wait to start another year!

Kindergarten: Ms.Hatmaker
First Grade: Ms.McGuire
Second Grade: Mrs.Zucker
Third Grade: Mrs.Zucker
Fourth Grade: Mr. C!
My 5 years at VHE have been AWESOME!! Lots of great things happened.
In kindergarten, one major event was the Clay Stomp! I still have some friends in this class who were with me during kindergarten!
Now let’s go to the trading silly bandz system. Also known as 1st grade (for me). Why I call this time the silly bandz system is because everybody was buying and trading them. Most kids brought them to school. I also had some tantrums with my friends because on accident I gave Lily my $ shaped band to her and I didn’t really mean to “share” it with her. In 1st grade there wasn’t too much homework. Nevermind, we had no homework. When I was in 1st grade I used to be very eager to finish my reading log. I did like reading, but best of all, we used to get pencils after we filled out our logs! All of the un-sharpened, awesome pencils I have are all collected from 1st grade!
2nd grade was kind of a new year, but it seemed really new in the sense of I had a new teacher who was new to this school. She was from Leopold Elementary! Her name was Mrs. Zucker. I met new people, friends, and got new supplies.
In 3rd grade my school year was basically the same as in 2nd grade. Same friends, people , teacher, etc. But……………………. something special did happen! Very very special. #1: I wrote a letter to the superintendent Cheatham about Sikhism , my religion. It turned out pretty well! #2: I wrote a letter to Mrs. Keeler (our principal) asking her to put me in Mr. C’s class In 4th grade. Well………………(this doesn’t deserve too many dots because you know what's going to happen next) I GOT INTO MR. C’S CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS SOOOOOOO HAPPY! You can tell I was so happy because of all the o’s and exclamation points.
Now my favorite, 4th GRADE!! Some major events were Brewers game, Great Dane night, Terrace Town, etc. At Great Dane lots of middle schoolers from Mr. C’s and Mrs. Mahr’s class came back to perform some old raps. I was Emcee along with Raia. At Terrace Town, Nisha, Lily and I created the Urban Cable. It was hard to build it but it was fun. Also, the Brewer’s game rocked. But…………………………. they lost by a run. :(
Now you know why these 5 years were AWESOME!!!!!!!

In Miss Cahill's class 2011-2012: In Miss Cahill’s class I met Yosef. He is a cool dude, and I am in his class now in Mr.C's room. In Miss Cahill's class 2012-2013: In Miss Cahill's class we went on a field trip to Kalahari, and me and Yosef were together as partners. Mr. C’s class (I wasn't in it yet) made bottle rockets. And guess what? Yosef and I got to watch it! It was cool that it happened so close to the end of the year. In Mr.C's class 2013-2014: Now me and Yosef are in Mr.C’s class and we have fun! I met Jeremiah. He is a cool dude, and he knew Yosef. All 3 of us are big goofballs and now all of us now know each other. |

I am going to be telling you how my years at VHE went, and why I liked it.
2nd grade-When I first started out at VHE, I was in second grade. I just came from a different school (Lapham). I had a really mean teacher which explains her name (Mrs. Stern). In Van Hise, I had Mrs. Stehle. She had a bunch of humor inside of her, and she was also very encouraging. My favorite memory with her was reading. She helped me with reading, and I feel like could never be as good as a reader that I am now without her. That year, my BFFs were Aja and Emmely. They were nice friends, and my life would be… normal without them.
3rd grade-Next I went to third grade and my new teacher was Mrs.Nelson. I got a new teacher because Mrs. Stehle decided to be something else in the school. Mrs. Nelson loves astronauts so she decided to work at NASA before she was teaching. My least favorite thing about this year is that my dearest friend Aja moved away to Platteville. This leaves me with Emmely.
4th grade- This year I am in 4th grade, and I love my new teacher Mrs.Mahr. She loves M&Ms, and that is why we are called the M&M classroom. My favorite thing about her is that she cares about her students. Sometimes she even gives us mints. Everyone says that Mrs. Mahr gives us chocolate throughout the school year but that is not true.
Extra Stuff
1-My favorite subject for a long time was reading. In fourth grade my new favorite subject was Social Studies
2-My best friend for years have been Aja and Emmely.
3-I’ve had the best teachers during my years at VHE.
4-VHE is the best school ever.

Memories of VHE and the C monster (Plus a bit of the Mahr-tian)
I used to go to Wingra School, and I stayed there for Kindergarten and 1st grade. However, it clearly states above that this is about VHE, not Wingra. SO, I came here in 2nd grade.
2nd Grade Teacher: Mrs. Stehle
Highlights: In 2nd grade, I mostly made new friends and learned new rules-- sadly, a lot of them from experience. (Like once I was kicking gravel on the side of the playground, waiting for my turn on an activity in gym class. Apparently, I had been told previously to stop and I had to sit on a bench for the rest of the class when Ms.Koval, our Gym teacher, saw me).
3rd Grade Teacher: Mrs. Nelson
Highlights: Once, Mrs. Nelson was making a joke that if someone opened this jar, toxic gasses would be released. Of course, someone opened the jar and Mrs. Nelson screamed really loud. (To keep going with the joke). A teacher, who had been walking in the hall, came in to see if everything was okay! We all burst out laughing! Another memory is when Mrs. Nelson was about to go on maternity leave, and we all wrote poems. Mine was about night. She really liked it.
4th Grade Teacher: Mr. C monster
Highlights -- Okay, there’s too many of these to call it ‘Highlights’. ANYWAY, I got to publish lots of books! These included Poems of Mystical Magical Mysterious Stuff and To Be or Not to Be, Grammatically, this is not a Question. The best thing was my Hamlet video!! I created my own adaptation of Hamlet with kids in my class as the cast. Then, some Hamilton kids came to film it! (click here to see it). Another Great experience was the Great Dane Performances! I sang the Periodic Table Song and an original composition of mine on the piano. Last but not least, I got wet! And threw snowballs at Mr. C! (It was outside of school at Rennebohm Park so we didn't get in trouble for it). What we did was play “Capture the Flag”, except we threw snowballs at each other instead of tagging. In one game, one team put their flag on a HUGE hill of snow, making it hard for people to get up. It was really fun!
P.S. For the last couple months of the year I wore a kilt to school! However, it wasn’t just for fun. The Madison Boychoir (which I am in) is touring to Scotland for the Aberdeen Scotland Youth Arts Festival, so I was raising awareness of the trip in my own special way!
Van Hise been a great school and I look forward to another great one next year!!!

Do you remember some of your elementary school memories? Well I do. (I wish I could list all of them, but by the way this has to be under one page long and plus I can can only remember so many)! So anyways, I have been at VHE for five years counting this year. Every single year at VHE has been a blast, because at Van Hise Elementary School we do epic things, and here’s a list of some of the epicly awesome things we did, starting from my Kindergarten year.
Kindergarten: In Kindergarten I still remember the first day of school when my mom came with me, and I met my first teacher, Mrs.Savage. During the year I was Ms. Smarty pants and Ms. Blabber mouth, I used to ALWAYS interrupt Mrs. Savage and my other classmates. I also remember when I used to talk all the time when Mrs.S (Savage) was talking and that would cost me some time during Friday Fun. One all-school event that I mostly remember is the clay stomp, basically all we did was stomp on clay (no joking that is what we did), and we made designs on clay that would soon become a mural, and it has!
First grade: In first grade... honestly I don’t remember much about first grade other than that my teacher, Mrs.Powell and field day. On field day we would play games with water of course, and for lunch we would eat outside. There would be hot dogs we could eat, or you could just eat your home lunch.
Second grade: In second grade I thought everything was going to change, but nothing really changed besides my teacher, Mrs.Zucker. Mrs.Zucker was new to VHE so she asked me how things work here, so I explained to her. In my second grade class, there was one kid I didn’t know. Her name was Rosemary (yep the fourth grader in Mr.C’s class now). I wanted to be friends with Rosemary, but we didn’t get off to a good start. Later in the year, me and Rosie became friends and I was very pleased about that! I also remember one exciting science experiment that I did in second grade, the experiment we did was on crayfish. What we did for the experiment was hold and observe the crayfish.
Third grade: Before third grade started I imagined me being a third grader and bossing the new second graders, but unfortunately, that did not happen. For third grade I had the same teacher as second grade, Mrs.Zucker (by the way this was the first time I had the same teacher for two years). Anyway, since I had Mrs.Zucker for two years I got used to how things worked in the classroom. I still remember how I was kinda like the teacher’s pet. In third grade I remember counting all the days of school every morning. Once in third grade Mrs.Zucker brought in her toaster and we ate breakfast in the classroom with our pajamas on we even got to watch a MOVIE! In third grade, I wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs. Keeler asking her to put me in Mr.C’s class. After I gave my letter to Mrs. Keeler I was so excited to see whose class I was in (you will find out whose class I am in the paragraph below this one)!!!
Fourth grade: Oh gosh, there’s a LOT to write about fourth grade, so I’m gonna write about my most precious memories. Okay, one very precious memory is, of course meeting my new teacher, Mrs. Mahr. I was very excited to meet Mrs. Mahr, even though I didn't get Mr.C, I still was very excited to have her because I knew Mr. C and Mrs. Mahr were buddy classes so I would have both of them as my teachers! Another precious memory is Terrace Town and the Sky Fly Express. Terrace Town is a city kids make out of recycled materials. So, for Terrace Town me and a few of my chums made a transportation system called urban cable. Okay, so when we went to Terrace Town we did a scavenger hunt, and on the scavenger hunt sheet it said, “What is the Sky Fly Express?” when I saw that I was so HAPPY because me and my friends worked SO hard and put a lot of effort into Terrace Town, so THAT was one good experience. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that before Terrace Town we did a multicultural potluck and that was fantabulous. I brought chicken fried rice, and the food I brought was gone just like THAT. In (I know that is not a big memory but it still is a memory) fourth grade, it was the first time I was an older buddy. Now I haven't really told you about the field trips I went to in fourth grade, so here are some: School forest, Brewers game, farmers market,Terrace Town, Mackenzie environmental center.
That’s all for NISHA’S MEMORIES!!! Tune in NEXT YEAR!!

Kindergarten
Teacher: Mrs.Robbin-Wright
I remember that in kindergarten I met Lily and Skyler. We became really good friends and we will always be. We played together a lot. It was my first year at VHE. Nisha was also in the same grade as me (she's my cousin).
First Grade
In first grade nothing particular happened. :)
Second Grade
Teacher: Miss Cahill
What I remember about 2nd Grade is that almost all the girls were enemies with each other in Miss. Cahill's class. At first we were friends, but we became not such good friends because of some games (pretty much) and also a bit of being left out of the games. Some kids wanted to play one game and some wanted to play another and some didn't even get to play. So that is how some of the year went. We had to have a talk with Miss. Cahill, but after the talk we were friends again. Nisha was able to go on top of the bars, and so were Skyler and Lily. They helped me go on top of the bars. I was able to go on but wasn't very happy getting off the bars. It was kind of hard.
Third Grade
Teacher: Miss Cahill
What I remember about 3rd Grade is that it was Miss. Cahill's last year at VHE, but the whole class made the best of it. I also remember that we did the Hedgie Hustle (a dance).
Fourth Grade
Teacher:Mr.C
What I remember about 4th grade is that some kids went to Rennebohm Park after school to play. We played capture the hockey stick with snow balls. It was great. One time, all the older people were on one team-by older people I mean Mr.C and Simon's (my classmate) brother. I also remember when we went to the Brewers game. They lost by one point. The game was fun but none of the foul balls came our way. I also remember that if you brought your own money, you could buy food there. Some kids brought their own money. I will also tell you about the field trip to the school forest. The trip was a blast but the day was cold. The best part of the trip was when we got to go on top of the sandstone cliff. Our tour guide let us go through a secret passageway. On top of the cliff, we could see almost all the groups. It was AWESOME!
I'm excited for a great next year!

Moving into 4 seasons
2nd grade
Teacher: Mrs. Stehle
My first day at Van Hise Elementary. I was really scared to be in a new classroom with so many kids I didn’t know. The first two people that I met were Aiden and Ike. Aiden showed me around the school, and Ike told me the schedule. Then I met Grace, and she took me to After School. That year I didn’t get homework, and the rest of the year was normal.
3rd grade
Teacher: Mrs. Martin
This year I made so many friends out of school, but I also made a lot in school. Now I will list my top 5 friends in school…# 5, Max! He is a great listener and overall good friend… #4, Henry! He is great at giving advice and cheering you up… #3, Jordan! He is great when you need someone to talk to… #2, Nana-Kofi! He is a great friend overall and the best for a fun-loving person… #1, Henrik! He is my best friend, because he will help with anything you need and the best friend a kid could ask for.
4th grade
Teacher: Mrs .Mahr
This year my class had Classes On Personal Safety (C.O.P.S.). We talked about smoking, marijuana, etc. When we finished C.O.P.S, we got T-shirts with the C.O.P.S. logo on it and we got certificates, too. This year we also had the Colonial Faire. My group was… Salem Witch Trials! We did a lot of studying about that topic, then put some fun-facts, a summary, and much more about the topic on a display. We had to do a skit about our topic, and I have to say that the final product was awesome. The skit was great and I got to take the tri-fold home! I also made two new friends. They are B-renn and Patrick.
This year was the best ever!!!

I was in VHE for 4 years so lets first start off with my first year.
My First grade teacher: Mrs.Clark
Mrs.Clark was a very awesome teacher but when I started school I cried when my mom left me at the classroom. What I didn't like about the end of the year was when Mrs. Clark told the class she was going to retire! Everybody was so sad. I was the saddest of them all, because Mrs.Clark was the best 1st grade teacher.
My second grade teacher: Mrs.Stehle
Mrs.Stehle was the best teacher! She was so funny she always made us laugh. I really liked to be in that class because that was the year I found my BFF. Her name is Taylor H. She is my first BFF. We REALLY have a lot of fun together.
My third grade teacher: Mrs.Nelson
Mrs.Nelson was awesome because she wanted to be an astronaut. It was cool that she wanted to be an astronaut. Instead she became a wonderful teacher. I liked that TAYLOR H. was in my class again. We really missed Mrs. Stehle because she was not a teacher that year, but, the good thing is, that Mrs.Stehle was still in the building.
My fourth grade teacher: Mrs. Mahr
Mrs. Mahr is the most incredible teacher ever. She loves M&Ms, and I do too! It has been a awesome year working with Mrs. Mahr. I liked when we had dress up day I dressed up as a Fashion designer. I really want to be one, it has been my DREAM. The year is almost over and I will be moving on to 5th grade. I’m really excited to go to 5th grade because we are going to be in straight grade classes and the teachers are going to be Mr.C, Mrs. Mahr, and Mrs. Gunderson. I want to be in Mrs. Gunderson's class because I don't know her so much. I want to get to know her.

My time at Van Hise is so precious, because I had so many outstanding moments, but I’ll start with the highlights. One of my favorite moments in Van Hise was the Colonial Faire. Another amazing memory is the Talent show, because I have been in the talent show every year since 2nd grade. My memories have always been special, and I will never forget each and every one of the Talent Shows. So far I’ve been taking school at Van Hise for 5 years so this place is so familiar and welcoming to me.
Kindergarten: I loved kindergarten because there was no homework. I think the point of kindergarten is finding and making lifelong friends. I will never forget the best kindergarten teacher ever, Mrs. Delgado. Kindergarten seemed to help me with writing and now that’s my favorite subject.
1st grade:My first grade experience was awesome all thanks to my strict but kind teacher Mrs. Clark. She was great. Although my kindergarten and 1st grade teachers both moved and have a different job, I still remember them. I loved those days. No homework!
2nd & 3rd grade: My 2nd and 3rd grade teacher was Ms.Ostertag. Our class had a ticket jar (A ticket jar is a jar that whenever our class does good at math or science, we get a certain amount of tickets, and if we get a hundred tickets, we earn a certain party we voted on in the beginning). My teacher was great.
4th grade: 4th grade was the grade that really got me moving. There was more studying, working, and homework. I realized school is more than easy work. We had book reports and the Colonial Faire, which was hard but really fun. 4th grade was one of my favorite years. I also loved how we had specials right in the morning, so that they got us moving. I liked 4th grade.
V.H.E. was great.
