Truly a Tale of Two Super Bowls
By Coach Fabius the Fabulous
Hello fans! Hope you enjoy this Super Bowl article (sequel of my recent playoff article). The two teams that battled it out are the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens won, but the game went down to the wire. When the 49ers were staring at the goal line, the Ravens came up huge and stopped San-Fran.
The AFC conference champion Ravens have one of the best defenses in the league with newly retired first ballot hall of fame middle linebacker Ray Lewis as well as future hall of famer Ed Reed. Outside line backer Terell Suggs has dual function: chasing down running backs and sacking the quarterback. Nose tackle Haloti Nagta can do the same, but he’s way bigger, so it hurts more, and that wears you down. But don’t count their offense out. This aspect of the team is also explosive with running back Ray Rice, QB Joe Flacco, and 3 very good wide outs in Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones.
As for the 49ers, they too have one of the top 5 defenses around, with Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith as the leaders. Their offense is a force to be reckoned with, thanks to second year second string QB sensation Colin Kaepernick (Milwaukee native). They have a strong running game with Frank Gore and LaMichael James. Not only can Kaepernick and the RBs gain massive yardage, but there are consistent targets through the air, receivers Randy Moss and Michael Crabtree, as well as tight end Vernon Davis.
The Game
In the first half the Ravens were on a roll, scoring 3 passing TDs. The first was to Bold. The second was a 1 yard pass to Pitta. The third was an amazing 56 yard pass to Jacoby Jones. What happened was he caught the ball, fell down, got back up, spun, faked out a defender and ran in to the end zone. It was one of the coolest plays I have ever seen! That made the score 21-6 Ravens. Heading into the locker room the 49ers only had two field goals to show for 30 minutes of play. To begin the first half, Jacoby Jones pulled out another heroic stunt and tied the record for longest play. He caught the kickoff 2 yards from the back of the end zone and returned it 108 yards to score a touchdown. So the score was 28-6. Just when the game seemed to be over, it happened; the lights went out.
Most people thought it was going to be a small delay (at least I thought it was going to be) but boy was I wrong. The delay was 34 minuets long. When the lights came back on it was like restarting the game and the momentum had definitely shifted. The 49ers went on to a 17 unanswered point run. On a 31-yard pass to Crabtree, he muscled through 2 tackles after the catch and scored. Frank Gore ran it in from 6 yards, and David Ankers kicked in. That made it 28-23; the score was devastating to all Ravens fans as their comfortable lead had evaporated.
Ravens scored 3, and Kaepernick ran it in from 15 yards away, making the score 31-29 The Ravens scored another 3 and made a stop on the goal line. On the other side they wasted time intentionally. With 14 seconds left the Ravens lined up like they were going to punt, but the kicker held the ball for 10 seconds before being pushed out of bounds giving the 49ers a safety with 4 seconds left. You might wonder why they would willingly give up points like that, but there’s good reason. By taking the safety they wasted time so the 49ers didn’t have time to throw a Hail Mary, the game was all but over.
The Ravens won 34-31. I think that a 49ers fan shut off the lights so they could win a bet worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I think they knew someone who worked at the stadium. This is the tale of two Super Bowls: the blowout and the nail biter.
